Predictors of neuronal loss in the substantia nigra Lead Investigator: Rezzak Yilmaz Institution : Ankara University Medical Scholl Dpt. Neurology E-Mail : rezzak.yilmaz@ankara.edu.tr Proposal ID : 1409 Proposal Description: It is known that neuronal loss in the substantia nigra starts decades before the clinical symptoms allow the diagnosis of Parkinson?s disease. It has also been suggested that some clinical manifestations related to Parkinson?s disease can be detected before the diagnosis, in the so called ?prodromal period?. However, the published criteria to detect individuals in the prodromal stage lack sensitivity indicating that the criteria should be improved with more specific markers and additional factors that play a role in the pathology nigral cell loss. Therefore, our objective in this project is: To explore whether additional demographical, clinical and pathological features are associated with nigral neuronal loss.
